I’ve been thinking/posting about wanting to visit or even permanently emmigrate to the Netherlands for some time, and after a few months of lulls after watching Bizarre Foods I’m strongly thinking about it again. So I’m curious if there’s any Dutch Oppos out there who can tell me more about the car culture there.

For as far as I know, we’re not an island, so I think you meant in the Netherlands haha.

Car culture, not as big as in US. Most people lease fuel efficient cars, because they are cheap to lease. Here are the 8 most leased cars:

People who don’t lease, buy small fuel efficient cars. Here are the 10 most bought cars (for more, check: http://www.autoweek.nl/verkoopcijfers… )

I have a buddy in Hoofddorp with a WRX. He’s always complaining about the cost of petrol

That’s all I got. Pretty much everyone else I know out there is a pedestrian.

Take away from this:

Somebody buys the Opel Karl.

Somebody buys the Up!

The Dutch really, really, like their small VWs.

Theb Dutch have an unusual love for French cars.

Yup, Dutch people really like VW. They look good and are reliable (that’s what most people think). We used to buy a lot from Opel, but know it’s VW all the way.

French cars are cheap and funny looking, I can understand it that people buy them.

Its actually alright, like most people said, most of the cars on the road are either fuel efficient econoboxes or lease wagons. The thing with us is, we like to complain. The car culture here is actually alright, there a bunch of brand-specialized shops (think of classic Alfa’s, Miata’s etc etc), plenty of enthousiast groups and we have our own Cars and Coffee events. Petrol prices are actually quite okay here, again, we love to complain. Our neighbours in the south (Belgium) and in the east (Germany) do have cheaper gas, but comparing it to a bunch of other countries in Europe, we’re doing fine.

I’ve always complained myself regarding the car culture here and people being barbarians, turning to plain, dull crapcans, but truth be told, there are quite some jewels driving around if you keep your eyes open.
